Air Pumps/Diffusers
Air pumps are critical components in all aspects of water features. These pumps push air thru "air-line" tubing of various diameters & exit into the water column via a diffuser (porous air stone, rubber membrane, etc.).
It is by this action, the bubbles' surface area aids in moving the oxygen-poor deeper water to the surface where it may get re-oxygenated.
Fact: Water gets oxygen from water surface-to-air contact. Not through "injection". This is why the surface areas of a pond & stream are so critical towards the health & balance of a system.

Koi ponds use air pumps for both aeration, circulation as well as aiding in debris collection via bottom drains!
Water gardens use air pumps for aeration, circulation as well as winterization. The fine bubbles en-masse create a subtle distrubance to prevent ice formation down to the single digit temperatures!
Retention ponds use air pumps to prevent stagnation & algae growth. Circulation of the deep water to the surface help reduce dramatic thermocline differences (temperature layers of a deep pond).
