In-line pumps, often referred to as "external pumps" are amongst the best in energy efficiencies.
Ideally these pumps are positioned in a "gravity fed" or "flooded suction" situation. This means the unit is located outside the water feature & below the water line allowing gravity to naturally flow to the pump.
In certain applications in-line pumps can be slightly above water level w/the use of a check-valve & strainer basket on the suction side. This allows water to be kept in the lines in the event the pump is turned off & thus keeping its prime.
